Everywhere you look there are slip dresses, chokers, and mom jeans. Though certain 70s-inspired pieces are still relevant (flowy off the shoulder tops, flares, etc), the moment is passing. We somehow fastforwarded through the 80s to the present 90s mania. Isn’t it funny how we recycle trends from people who thought we would all be wearing nothing but metallic jumpsuits by now?
I’m not a trend forecaster, but it seems logical to look to the early 2000s for what’s coming next. In any case, I thought it would be fun to predict more 2000s fashion trends that are coming back.
After off the shoulder, cold shoulder, and crop tops being so huge this seems like the next natural step. I don’t expect this to happen in the fall/winter season but maybe they’ll start popping up next summer.
Remember these things? Now that athleisure is officially a thing (I feel it has more staying power than something like normcore because pretty much everyone works out these days), it also makes sense. And sweatsuits are actually considered fashionable now (thanks, Vetements!). Just watch – I bet someone like Chiara Ferragni or Gigi Hadid will get a pair, somehow make them look fabulous and everyone will be all over them.
Velvet is supposed to be big this fall, so maybe it’s cousin velour will tag along. In tracksuit style, of course, to give your athleisure look some vintage vibes (do early 2000s count as vintage yet?).
Remember Von Dutch guys? At work we have baseball caps everywhere. To wear with everything – even feminine dresses. Move over toques and floppy hats.
Adidas has been having a good run, but remember Pumas? The curved line actually seems very refreshing after all those triple stripes.
The skinny scarves and neckties are cute, but remember ties?? Throw one nonchalantly over your t-shirt a la Avril Lavigne, use it instead of a belt, make yourself a headscarf … I can see Leandra Medine doing this.
At this point you’re probably having a laugh or thinking that I must be crazy. It’s true that most of these trends were awful, but may I remind you that not too long ago sweatpants and Birkenstocks were also on the fashion black list? Now they’ve been reinvented to look good, as I expect the above trends will be. I’m actually kind of excited to see the new and improved versions.
