Protecting My Eyes With e-Polette Glasses

Do you remember your first computer?

Mine was a family computer and I must have been 8 or 9 when we got it. My sister and I were allowed to go on it for an hour or so daily because it was dial-up. It was in the kitchen where my mom could monitor us. Every day I would run home from school so I could go on the computer and play Neopets (did anyone else play Neopets?). Oh the early 2000s!

Flash forward to 2016, where I have a cell phone, tablet, and laptop. And there’s also my work laptop. It’s pretty crazy how attached we’ve gotten to computers and phones in the past decade. The Washington Post recently revealed that on average our generation watches some form of screen 8 hours a day and checks their phone 150 times a day! I’ve even started to feel that movies and TV shows from the 2000s seem dated because they don’t show people on their phones as much.

Recently Polette (see my sunglasses from them here) reached out for me to try out their new e-Polette glasses, which are specially designed to protect eyes by filtering blue light from LED screens. A lot of exposure to blue light disrupts our biological clock (so scrolling your instagram feed when you can’t go to sleep isn’t the best idea), and it has also been connected to damaged retinas.

My eyesight isn’t the greatest (I’m about a -4.5), so naturally I want to give my poor eyes any extra protection they can get. I normally don’t like glasses but I’ve been wearing my e-Polettes every time I use a computer, tablet, or phone at home. They filter 40% of blue light and I actually can feel a difference when I wear them. My eyes feel more relaxed, which is great because I wear contacts and sometimes my eyes get tired by the end of the day.

In the photos I’m wearing the e-rubis glasses, but they have a bigger selection of frames available starting at $19.99, which is a pretty amazing price for protecting your eyes.

Thanks for reading! Do you think we need to try harder to protect our eyes from all the screen time?

What a nifty pair of glasses… I feel like I need them. I stare at a screen ALL DAY. ALLLLLL DAY!!! I sometimes forget to blink. So bad!!

And the stat about looking at our phones 150 times per day? Yeah. Probably!! Maybe even more. Craziness!!!

Thank you for leaving the comment on my blog about not knowing what the future holds. I think that’s what gives me such anxiety… I like planning and control. The unexpected freaks me out. I need a better handle on that….

Thanks! Aww that’s intense! At my job I sometimes get breaks from screen time but I still spend a lot of time looking at them.

You’re very welcome. I feel you – I also like planning and control. We all have bad days and sometimes we just need a little support <3

Of course we have to do what we can to protect our eyes from the screen, it can cause headaches too. Very nice reminder and a great idea !!!

    • Maria

Thanks Christina! I don’t usually get headaches but my eyes get tired.

Thanks for pointing this out, I hadn’t given this subject much thought because it hasn’t yet been a problem so far. Then again, there’s no telling how much damage my eyes have already sustained in the past years. I also wear contacts (around -3), but my eyes seem stable when doing the eye chart tests. I do try to regularly take breaks from staring at my screen, it’s also better for my back (apparently, sitting is the new smoking!). I’ll check out those glasses, I didn’t even know they existed! Does your screen look any different when wearing these glasses (like slightly different colors)?

It is hard to eyes haven’t changed a ton but they have gotten a lot worse since when I first started wearing glasses. I think I was 11/12 and only about -1 but now it’s closer to -5 :/ I have a friend who got laser eye surgery about 5 years ago and she says her vision has worsened a bit since, not as worse as before the surgery, but she thinks it’s because of all the screen time. I think I need to take more computer breaks. A little bit, but not drastically. It feels a bit nicer actually. xx
